standard and a few other organizations. we have been putting the chuck hagel nomination for the secretary of defense. also less partisan activities, foreign policy, try to make sure the u.s. stays strong, even though i believe president obama's policies are taking us in the wrong direction. i have talked to people about restarting a small republican guard from 1994 -- group from 1994, the project for republican future, which tried -- party was a little exhausted, the conservative movement was exhausted, it tried to reinvigorate things. it worked for gingrich. it opposed the clinton health care plan. now is the time to think about the republican future to make sure -- there are many good ideas out there, national affairs, the national review, they are publishing interesting positive policy agendas for getting us out of the whole we are in on that -- on debt, deficit, reforming health care, financial services, foreign policies. there are a lot of good young politicians. i'm not sure anybody is going around the country and talking to younker -- younger voters and officials who might want to

their message. free conservative media, in particular, so in the national review, look, liberal groups, anti-hagel adds hit tv screens, liberal group releases no, on hagel ad, the washington free beacon, democratic group airs ad blasting hagel. supposedly these ads are being run by liberals and democrats, against hagel. but these liberals against hagel are anonymous, telling the press they are "allies" with the obama administration, who are staying anonymous because they fear retribution or fear from the white house. this whole thing just seems off, right? i mean there are obviously two intentions with setting it up like this. they're trying to convey the impression that this is a white house who attacks and tears up anybody who disagrees with them. that is the way the right likes to think about this white house, that is the way they operate. they may be more effective if they did, but that is not what they do. more broadly, they're asserting there is broad opposition to chuck hagel, we're just not allowed to know who it is. i'm not buying it it, i say bull-pucky, i might be wrong, but i call bull

secretary of state in chuck hagel and john kerry who are known for favoring a light footprint. do you think that they are going to take the action that you believe is needed? >> well, i look forward to raising these questions with them when i get a chance to attend their confirmation hearings in the case of senator john kerry or to meet with him in person in the case of senator hagel. i met this morning with senator kerry to give him an update on this trip. a number of the senators who were on the trip with me met with him, and i am determined that we make certain that the united states invests in the kind of forward leaning relationship in africa that will take the fight to al qaeda in africa and that will invest in stability in countries where if we don't partner with them effectively, they may slip into the kind of state that mali's in now. just a few short years ago, mali was viewed as a stable, democratic ally of the united states and it's come unwound fairly quickly. i chaired a hearing on december 5th to look at mali and to look at the situation there and try and raise its profile. i
